Accessible Transport in Townsville

Safe & Sound Transit provides private, pre-booked accessible transport throughout Townsville and surrounding areas.

Our service is available to everyone, including passengers who use wheelchairs or other mobility aids. If you have accessibility requirements, simply let us know when booking so we can make sure the appropriate vehicle is available for your trip.

Wheelchair Accessible Transport

We have wheelchair-accessible vehicles available for passengers who need to remain in their wheelchair while travelling.

Our vehicles are designed to allow passengers to board safely using the vehicle's accessibility equipment, with the wheelchair appropriately positioned and secured for travel.

Please let us know that wheelchair access is required when making your booking so we can allocate the correct vehicle.

Ambulant Passengers

You do not need to use a wheelchair to travel in one of our accessible vehicles.

We regularly provide transport for ambulant passengers, including seniors, passengers with limited mobility and anyone who may simply benefit from easier vehicle access.

If you have difficulty with steps, getting in or out of vehicles or have another mobility consideration, please let our team know when booking.

Vehicle Capacity

The number of passengers we can transport will depend on the vehicle being used and whether wheelchair spaces are required for the booking.

Wheelchairs and mobility equipment can affect the available seating configuration, so we recommend advising us of the number of passengers, wheelchairs and mobility aids when making your booking.

Our team can then confirm whether the appropriate vehicle is available for your trip.

Wheelchair Ramps and Vehicle Access

Our wheelchair-accessible vehicles are fitted with equipment designed to assist passengers to safely enter and exit the vehicle.

Wheelchair size, weight and configuration can vary considerably, so it is important that we are advised of the type of wheelchair or mobility device being used before the first booking.

Where necessary, we may arrange a suitability check before travel to ensure the wheelchair and passenger can be safely accommodated within the vehicle.

Wheelchair Securement

Wheelchairs must be appropriately positioned and secured within the vehicle before transport can commence.

Our drivers will use the vehicle's wheelchair securement system to secure the wheelchair for travel.

Passengers must also use the appropriate passenger restraint or seatbelt provided within the vehicle while travelling.

If a wheelchair cannot be safely secured within the vehicle, we may be unable to complete the trip.

Mobility Aids

Where space permits, we can transport reasonable mobility aids required by the passenger, including items such as walkers and folding mobility equipment.

Please tell us about any mobility aids when making your booking so we can ensure there is sufficient room within the vehicle.

Safe & Sound Transit provides a transport service only. Our drivers are not able to provide lifting, transferring, personal care or physical support that would normally be provided by a carer or support worker.

Service and Assistance Animals

Service and assistance animals are welcome to travel with Safe & Sound Transit.

For the safety of passengers, drivers and the animal, the client is responsible for providing an appropriate restraint for the animal during transport.

This may include a suitable travel crate, cage, harness or vehicle seat belt restraint, depending on the animal and its requirements.

The animal must remain appropriately restrained while the vehicle is travelling.

Carers and Support Workers

Passengers are welcome to travel with a family member, carer or support worker where required.

If a passenger requires personal care, lifting, transferring, physical assistance, medical assistance or supervision beyond the transport service, an appropriate carer or support person must travel with them.

Please include any accompanying passengers when making your booking so we can ensure there is sufficient seating available.

Wheelchair Suitability Checks

If you are unsure whether your wheelchair or mobility device can be safely accommodated in one of our vehicles, please contact our office before booking.

We can discuss the wheelchair dimensions, passenger requirements and vehicle configuration and, where required, arrange a suitability check before the first trip.

This helps ensure the appropriate vehicle can be allocated and avoids problems on the day of travel.

Booking Accessible Transport

Accessible transport must be pre-booked so we can allocate the appropriate vehicle and allow sufficient time for the booking.

When booking, please let us know:

  • Whether the passenger uses a wheelchair

  • Whether the passenger will remain in their wheelchair during travel

  • The type and approximate size of the wheelchair or mobility device

  • Any additional mobility aids travelling with the passenger

  • Whether a carer or support worker will also be travelling

  • Whether a service or assistance animal will be travelling

  • Any other transport-related accessibility requirements we should be aware of

Providing this information in advance helps us make sure the right vehicle is available and your trip can be completed safely and comfortably.

Accessible Transport for Everyone

You do not need to be an NDIS participant to use our accessible transport service.

Safe & Sound Transit welcomes private customers, seniors, families, wheelchair users, NDIS participants and members of the general public.

Whether you are heading to an appointment, shopping, lunch or dinner, the airport, a wedding, an event or simply getting out and about, you can pre-book your transport with us.
